CS2 VAC bans explained

A VAC ban is Valve Anti-Cheat's permanent ban for running cheats on a VAC-secured server. This is what Steam Support says about it, plus the VAC error players hit most often.

What a VAC ban is

VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) checks the game files of players on Valve's servers. If you connect to a VAC-secured server from a computer with a detectable cheat, your account is banned from playing that game on VAC-secured servers. Any third-party modification that gives one player an advantage counts as a cheat. Hardware setups and updated drivers don't trigger a ban.

Can you appeal a VAC ban?

No. Steam Support says VAC bans are permanent, can't be appealed and can't be removed by support. If a ban was issued by mistake, Valve removes it automatically after an investigation. That has happened in CS2: Valve reversed wrong VAC bans for some AMD driver users in October 2023, and again in December 2025 and January 2026.

It also doesn't matter who was playing: a ban stays on the account even if someone else used it.

What a VAC ban does to your account

  • You can't play the game on VAC-secured servers. Single-player, LAN and non-secured servers still work.
  • Items and games can't be moved to another account. The banned account can still receive items, but not send them.
  • You can't gift the game you were banned in, upload to its community hub or vote on its Workshop.
  • For games that use it, the ban also applies to every account sharing the same phone number.
  • If someone uses your library through Family Sharing to cheat, your account can be banned too.

The ban is shown on the Steam profile. You can check anyone's with our cheater checker.

Fixing "VAC was unable to verify your game session"

This error, and "Disconnected by VAC: You cannot play on secure servers", doesn't mean you're banned. Steam Support says it's caused by software interfering with the game or Steam, or by modified game files. Its fixes, in order:

  1. Remove custom textures, skin changers or anything else that modifies game files, restart, and verify the game files in Steam.
  2. Close software that's known to conflict while you play: CCleaner, PowerShell, Cheat Engine, IObit Start Menu 8, DLL injectors, hypervisors and Steam idlers.
  3. Exit Steam and restart your computer.
  4. Repair the Steam service: exit Steam, press Windows+R and run "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair (use your own Steam path if it's elsewhere).
  5. Reset boot settings: open Command Prompt as administrator and run bcdedit /deletevalue nointegritychecks, bcdedit /deletevalue loadoptions, bcdedit /debug off and bcdedit /deletevalue nx, then restart.
  6. Repair system files: run sfc /scannow in an administrator Command Prompt, then restart.

FAQ

Is a CS2 VAC ban permanent?
Yes. Steam Support says VAC bans are permanent and can't be appealed or removed by support. Wrong bans are removed automatically after Valve investigates.
Can I still trade with a VAC banned account?
Partly. A VAC banned account can't move items or games to another account, but it can still receive items.
Does 'VAC was unable to verify your game session' mean I'm banned?
No. It's an error caused by software interfering with CS2 or Steam, or by modified game files. Steam Support's fixes are to remove the software or mods, restart, repair the Steam service and reset boot settings.
Can I see if another player has a VAC ban?
Yes. It's shown on their Steam profile, and ZeroStrike's cheater checker shows VAC and game bans for any player.
